The Cosmic Ocean
The Waters are not water as mortals understand it. They are not liquid, not solid, not gasâthey are the fundamental substance from which all existence flows. Life force, magic, chaos, order, creation, entropyâall of these are merely different currents within the Waters.
"The sands of the beaches that the KeepersKeepers walk upon are dimensions. These 'galaxy sands' travel back and forth in the Waters of life and magic that the Keepers manage."
Imagine an ocean so vast that entire universes are mere grains of sand on its shores. Now imagine that ocean is not made of water, but of pure potentialâthe raw material of existence itself, constantly churning, mixing, separating, and recombining.
The Nature of the Waters
What They Contain
The Waters contain everything and nothing simultaneously. Within their depths flow:
Life Force
The energy that animates all living things. When a being dies, their life force returns to the Waters, to be recycled into new existence.
Magic
Raw, unformed magical potential. What mortals call "mana" or "essence" is simply a drop of the Waters brought into reality.
Chaos
Unpredictability, randomness, change. The current that Diaglo draws power from. It seeks to disrupt all patterns and create new possibilities.
Order
Structure, pattern, law. Lumina's domain. It seeks to stabilize the Waters, to create lasting forms from the chaos.
Creation
The force that brings new things into being. Not just life, but matter, energy, ideasâeverything that IS was once drawn from this current.
Entropy
The inevitable return to nothingness. What Apocalyptica embodies. Not evil, but necessaryâfor without endings, there can be no beginnings.
The Eternal Flow
How the Waters Move
The Waters do not simply existâthey flow. They have currents, tides, storms, and calms. But these movements follow no predictable pattern. The Keepers cannot control the Waters; they can only observe, adjust, and hope to maintain balance.
When the currents align in just the right way, something new emerges from the Waters. A dimension. A god. A cosmic anomaly. These emergent phenomena are not plannedâthey are the Waters expressing their inherent creativity.
Renaldo's creation of Nexus did not happen in isolation. He drew power from the Waters, reshaped currents, diverted flows. His act of creation sent ripples through the entire cosmic oceanâripples that are still propagating, still creating consequences he never anticipated.
Swimming in the Waters
Can One Enter the Waters?
Yes. And it is almost always fatal.
To enter the Waters physically is to be unmade. Your body dissolves, your identity fragments, your consciousness disperses into the currents. Most beings who attempt this simply cease to exist in any meaningful way.
But some survive. Those with extraordinary willpower, magical protection, or divine favor can enter the Waters and return changed. They bring back knowledge, power, or abilities that should not exist within the laws of their home dimension.
A Warning: If you find yourself near the Watersâand you will know them when you see them, for they are unmistakableâdo not dive in seeking power. The Waters take more than they give, and what they give is not always what you wanted.
The Disruption
When the Waters Turn Turbulent
The Keepers describe their oceans as "a torment of disarray." This is not metaphor. The Waters are becoming more chaotic, less predictable, harder to manage.
Why? Some theories:
Theory One: Too many dimensions have been created, drawing too much from the Waters, destabilizing the balance.
Theory Two: The War of the Gods sent shockwaves through the Waters that will take eons to settle.
Theory Three: Apocalyptica is rising, and her presence increases the entropy current, overwhelming all others.
Theory Four: The Waters themselves are alive, conscious, and angry at being managed for so long.
The truth may be all of these, none of these, or something far stranger that no one has yet imagined.
What Lies Beneath
The Waters the Keepers manage are only the surface. Scholars whisper of depths beyond depths, currents beneath currents, abyssal zones where even the Keepers dare not look.
What exists in those unreachable depths? What ancient things might dwell where even entropy cannot reach? What will emerge if the Waters' turmoil reaches down to those forgotten places?
Perhaps it is better not to know. Perhaps some mysteries exist not to be solved, but to remind us that reality is far larger, far stranger, and far more dangerous than we dare imagine.
